How To Train Your Dragon is the first book in Cressida Cowell’s 12-part series. This book introduces readers to key characters like the Vikings Hiccup, Snoutlout, Fishlegs, and the lovable dragon Toothless, who appear throughout the series. If you’ve watched the movies or TV series, you’ll recognise these characters, though there are subtle differences between the adaptations. In this reviewer’s opinion, the books are superior, offering edge-of-your-seat action. This review is by George, aged 9.

What do you like about this book?

Personally, for me I really like dragons making this an obvious choice. I like this book because Hiccup is the most unlikely Viking to be a hero. He is a bit of a disappointment to his father but what he lacks in muscles he makes up for in brains (which is unusual for a Viking in this book). The relationship between Toothless and Hiccup is very heart lifting even though Toothless can be a menace sometimes (which is not seen in the movies).

What do you not like about How to Train Your Dragon?

I didn’t like it when I finished the first book as it was such an amazing adventure story. I disliked the character Snoutlout because he bullies Hiccup so that made me feel uncomfortable.

Who is your favourite character?

Toothless! He is a mischievous, cheeky, and possibly the worlds smallest dragon.

Who would you recommend this book to?

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dragons, Vikings, or awesome adventure stories.

Were you able to read this book on your own?

I was able to read this on my own, but I actually read this with my Dad as he loves Cressida Cowell books.
