The Saracen’s Head is said to be Bath’s oldest pub, built in 1713 on the site of a coaching inn. Charles Dickens stayed here as a young reporter and satirised Bath’s social life in ‘The Pickwick Papers’.

Bath’s literary history is rich and varied, as well as the famous names already discussed, there’s Black Beauty writer Anna Sewell, Alexander Pope, Fanny Burney, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Tim Weaver, Angela Carter… the list goes on! No wonder the Bath Literature Festival is world famous!
