Written in 2009 and in the style of a journal, this is a beautifully written book. The journal is written by Logan Mountstuart and covers most of the early 21st Century. Logan is a complicated character and at times unlikeable but soon wins you round again. He is born in South America in 1900s and his life is at times ordinary and extraordinary. He goes to Oxford, becomes a writer, a spy and an art-dealer. Throughout his career some of the most famous people of the century cross his path from Virginia Woolf, Hemmingway, Ian Fleming and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
However, as a friend, father and husband he makes many mistakes, but it is a journey deep into a “very human heart”. I loved this book, and it was very easy to read as it is in a journal format. William Boyd is an excellent writer and at times who can forget it is a fiction book.
