This crime story was recommended to me by a colleague and I am glad that he did. The story is set in 1920’s India, at the height of the British Raj. It introduces us to Captain Sam Wyndham, a World War One veteran, former Scotland Yard detective, now based in Calcutta. He has been recruited to a new post in the police force and his feet barely touch the ground when he is summoned to a murder. A prominent business man in Calcutta has been found murdered and his body in found in a very Indian dominated area with a note left in his mouth which warns the British to quit India.
Captain Wyndham is joined in the investigation by an arrogant British Officer, Inspector Digby and the interesting British-educated but Indian born Sergeant Bangerjee. His investigation leads him to Indian nationalists, a train robbery and right up to the Governor of Bengal himself.
I initially found this book a bit of a slow burn but then realised I was already halfway through and was very intrigued how it would play out. The characters are very well laid out and Captain Wynham is a great hero of the book with quite a few flaws. I particular liked the description of the British Raj. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have reserved the next in the series.
