Weep: The Irish Epidemic by Eoin Brady

Mr. Brady brings readers along on a brutal yet relatable journey along the eastern coast of Ireland, filled with moments of fun, desperation, and tension. The narrative will have you eagerly flipping pages to see how each set piece concludes, while simultaneously making you hesitant to turn the next page, fearing what it might hold.

Eoin does a fantastic job of putting readers in the shoes of the unlikely protagonist, Fin. You’ll find yourself wondering what you’d do in similar circumstances, with no one but yourself to rely on. Fin is no hero by any standard—just an ordinary citizen thrust into rural Ireland, early in the throes of an epidemic that can’t be mitigated with a mask or a jab.

As the infected population burns with fever and descends into madness, Fin is forced to make snap decisions and question his morality at every turn. Desperate to return to his family, he faces the difficult choice of leaving those he meets along the way to fend for themselves or staying to support the remaining survivors.

This gripping tale is a masterful blend of suspense and moral complexity, offering readers an immersive experience that will leave them contemplating their own choices in such dire circumstances. Brady’s storytelling prowess shines through, making this a must-read for fans of intense, thought-provoking fiction.

Fir by Sharon Gosling was visually brilliant and deliciously creepy; I really didn’t want things to end. One thing that really stood out to me about the story is the main character’s perspective. We as the reader don’t know the character’s name, how old they are, if they are a boy or a girl.

My personal thoughts from reading Fir were that the main character’s voice that I could hear in my mind was a 14/15-year-old male. The story is set in the north of Sweden where the main character and their parents arrive in an old plantation house surrounded by hundreds of trees. But from the minute they arrive, it’s very clear that someone doesn’t want them there.

Honestly, don’t read this book when you are alone in the house, one of the characters Dorothea was such a miserable grump but did play quite a huge role in Fir. I say the age range for readers who want to read Fir is 15+ primarily because of some of the graphic descriptions of most of the scary events that happen throughout.
